This fish weir was photographed in Nantucket Sound from a Cessna plane with a Canon Camera on August 27, 2005. A fish weir, also known as a fish trap, is a semi-permanent structure made of netting and poles driven into the ocean floor to trap fish. The poles form a maze-like enclosure that resembles a heart, spade, or mickey mouse ears from above. Fish are unable to swim backwards, so they follow the shape of the enclosure and become trapped. The fishermen typically start up in April and end in the fall.These days sea bass, butterfish, squid and sometimes scup are fished in this manner, though the practice is limited. Even so, the quality of fish caught up in the traps makes it all worthwhile for the fishermen who have to put out the nets and poles, then remove them again, each season. Photo ©Marcia Joy Duggan
